Do you have a wiring diagram? - Go to your local library and get them to order you a manual on interlibrary loan and photocopy the manual - then you will know what each wire is doing.
There shouldn't be much trouble making the switch - but you must know what you are cutting before you start splicing the new wires in to the wiring harnesses.
You have worked it out correctly that you will need a new set of wires to those rear lites if they are to function as running lites as well.
Keep the ends bare of rubber well taped down.
